Course description:  CMT I is designed to prepare students to service and maintain modern personal computers and peripherals.  Basic networking skills will also be covered.  Students will become adept at troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, as well as performing routine maintenance on PCs.  Each student will be provided the resources needed to prepare for the CompTIA A+ certification exam.

Curriculum:The main text for this course will be software based.  As a Cisco Local Academy, GAVC will utilize the Cisco IT Essentials version 4.0 curriculum for this course.  Students will be given a copy of the curriculum, including the software based text, the student Lab Manual in pdf format, and two PC simulations on CD.  Students will be required to use these applications outside of class as well as in class.  Instructions for installing the software on the students’ home computer can be acquired from the instructor.   In addition, students will have a Cisco Academy user id and password to view the curriculum directly from the Cisco Academy web site at http://cisco.netacad.net.  Other supplemental materials will be utilized throughout the course.  These materials may include any or all of the following:   The Enhanced A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC  by Jean Andrews, excerpts from other texts deemed useful by the instructor, various websites, and other supplemental materials.  Hands-on group lab work will constitute approximately 25% of the class time.  This will include time spent servicing and maintaining GAVC’s 150+ computers and peripherals, as well as servicing customer machines in the school shop, (see below).

Required supplies and materials Each student must purchase a basic computer technician’s tool kit, available in class.  The cost of the tool kit is $25.00.  In addition to the cost of the tool kit, there is a $20.00 course fee required of each student.  Students will need to purchase outside of class, one 5 subject spiral notebook or a three-ring binder and loose leaf paper used for required journaling, vocabulary assignments, in-class note taking, and recording assigned homework, as well as his/her own writing utensils.  These will not be provided in class.

Grading Students will be graded based on a combination of factors.  Each of these factors will be weighted equally.  These factors include, but are not limited to:  Homework assignments, Technical Journal writing and vocabulary, Classroom lab work, Periodic quizzes/tests/exams, Citizenship/behavior, and Portfolio development.

Work Days:  Most Fridays will be scheduled work days.  Work that needs to be done on GAVC machines or school shop customer machines will be the responsibility of the CMT I students, with help from the instructors.  Students will also be allowed to bring equipment from home for repair or service work.
